The Mendocino Gardens are one of the most beautiful features of Fort Bragg— second, of course, to the amazing Pacific Ocean. They are a definite favorite of locals & visitors alike.
The Botanical Gardens were founded in 1961 and opened to the public in 1966. People travel for hundreds of miles to visit the amazing 47 acres of gardens, wetlands, and forests. The vast collection of plants includes hybrid rhododendrons that are over 40 years old along with thousands of perennials, heathers and other popular varieties.
Visitors can walk down a number of trails of different intensity levels leading to beautiful gardens. One trail even takes strollers out to the bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The park is wheelchair accessible, and benches are available throughout the gardens, providing the perfect place for a picnic or birdwatching. Over 180 species of birds can be found in the gardens.
Thousands of people take time to enjoy the gardens each year. The care of the gardens is undertaken by a small staff along with a large group of dedicated volunteers. Local artists are also featured in the gardens. Plants are available for purchase, as are souvenirs found in the gift shop. Gardening classes are available to help those interested in horticulture grow healthier plants.
A variety of snacks and drinks can be enjoyed at Rhody’s Garden Café, located in the gardens. Your doggie can even get an ice cream! Each year, the Botanical Gardens hosts Retro Sunday, when admission is only one dollar. To learn more about the gardens and its fun activities, check out their Facebook page.
